{"id":62,"date":"2011-04-08T10:58:00","date_gmt":"2011-04-08T15:58:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kdnovelties.com\/blog\/?guid=5707745c480e5a5e66ab67ee4c40913d"},"modified":"2011-04-08T11:14:27","modified_gmt":"2011-04-08T16:14:27","slug":"talked-out-of-tantrums","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kdnovelties.com\/blog\/2011\/04\/talked-out-of-tantrums\/","title":{"rendered":"Talked Out of Tantrums"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new study in the <em>Early Childhood Research Quarterly<\/em> states that reading to your kids may help keep them from throwing fits.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers measured toddlers&#8217; spoken vocabulary and self-regulation and the ability to control behavior and emotions.<\/p>\n<p>Increased vocabulary especially at 24 months serves as a strong predictor of self-regulation.  Especially in boys since they&#8217;re extra-vulnerable to self control problems to begin with.<\/p>\n<p>The increased vocabulary leads kids to voice their thoughts and to take charge of their situation instead of growing frustrated.  It makes sense since smaller children that can not talk will throw a tantrum because they can not express what they want or need!<\/p>\n<p>The research led to kids that had a boost from thinking and communicating in words resulted in tantrums being dramatically reduced.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore if your child throws tantrums READ to them more and help them build their vocabulary!<\/p>\n<p>Check out my previous post on the blog (scroll down) on teaching your child to read and the method I used with my daughter.
